Mother Began Crying

Description

“Mother Began Crying” takes its title from the words of KPFA reporter Karen Lee Wald reporting on the Soledad Brothers Trial. She describes the sequence of events leading up to an outbreak of violence in the courtroom:

  1. Attorneys say that Fleeta Drumgo and John Clutchette have been beaten and tortured.
  2. The judge refuses to acknowledge the evidence of torture.
  3. Fleeta removes his shirt, and the cigarette burns on his neck are visible to all in the spectator section.
  4. The judge refuses to acknowledge the evidence of torture.
  5. John Clutchette’s mother begins crying.
  6. The judge orders she be removed.
  7. Protests erupt; the police commence beating people.

“Mother Began Crying” considers the collision of motherly love and systems hatred.
